If I Were President…

One of the first things I would do is completely eliminate the Department of Education. I believe that this Department is a total waste of money. Each state should be responsible for the education of its citizens. They do not need oversight by the Federal Government.
If fact, the annual budget for the Department of Education is $56 billion dollars. Currently, there are 61.2 million school-age children between 5 and 19 in the United States.
Basically, if you just got rid of the DOE and gave the money directly to the schools for educating children, each school would receive $915 dollars per student. That money could buy a lot of books, supplies and programs!
I don’t advocate giving the money to the States to distribute - give it directly to each individual school budget. Let the teachers decide how to use the money the wisest. The administrators would eventually squander the money away, leaving nothing for the kids.
