Scooter Libby’s sentence was commuted. He will serve no jail time. He DID NOT receive a Presidential pardon. A pardon eradicates a conviction, while a commutation simply gets rid of the sentence, or jail time of 30 months in Libby’s case. The President has been under pressure to grant a pardon to Libby, but did not do so at this time.
The whole case resolved around who knew what, at what time and who leaked it. There were a lot of “I don’t remember”s from many of the witnesses (maybe they need IBM memory installed in their brains). Libby was ultimately convicted of perjury, obstruction of justice and lying to investigators, all in relation to the leaking of CIA operative Valerie Plame.
Libby can still appeal this decision and will do so. He also will pay a $250,000 fine.
