As more details emerge from the story about British teacher Gillian Gibbons, the more it leaves a very bad taste. Gibbons teaches 7 year olds in Sudan. She introduced a teddy bear to the class and asked the class to name the bear. The class chose to name the bear after a popular student in the class, Mohamed. Every class member took the bear home and wrote a journal entry. The journal was then compiled and the title - “My name is Mohamed.”
It wasn’t a student that ratted her out to authorities, but an office assistant by the name of Sara Khawad who complained to the Ministry of Education.
Gibbons was arrested and given a 15 day sentence. This sentence was later changed to 10 days since she spent 5 days in the local jail for “questioning.” Seriously? You are going to question a teacher for five days about naming a bear? Please!
Now, of course, a mob of, you guessed it, men only (since women have no rights), are calling for the EXECUTION of Ms. Gibbons. Her crime - insulting Islam.
I am so glad I live in the United States where I can call my Teddy Bear whatever I want without fear of being beheaded for doing so. If a teacher in this country decided to name the Teddy Bear, Jesus, there would be upset parents and some maybe even calling for her dismissal. However, she would not go to jail and she would not be killed.
Besides, Mohamed was a PROPHET not a God! We name stuffed animals Abraham, Moses, etc., all former prophet names and it is not considered disrespectful. After all, it is JUST a NAME.
