Say It Ain’t So Mitt!

In a stunning address to the CPAC audience, Mitt Romney bowed gracefully out of the race. I am sure that he had finally realized that there was no chance for him to win the nomination. The problem? Where does that leave the conservatives? A few will vote for Mike Huckabee in the ensuing primaries, but I wonder if Romney supporters will just stay home.

A big showing for Huckabee will not win him the nomination either. It is McCain and that’s that. Is McCain going to support conservative principles? It is way to early to tell. After winning the nomination, McCain may end up moving more toward the left of the party to woo independents and moderate Democrats. This may end up infuriating conservatives who do have an option. Write in Mitt Romney on your ballot on November 4th!

I am not a proponent of John McCain’s, so I am hoping your analysis that Romney voters will just stay home is wrong. I think Romeny supports can much more easily reconcile with Huckabee than McCain. In fact, while it makes sense for McCain to choose Huckabee as a running mate, it doesn’t follow that Huckabee should choose McCain. Good tactics would dictate that he should probably court someone seen either as a strong economic conservative like Romney or someone strong on foreign policy. Also, there are other ways of killing the fairtax proposal, therefore making that a non-issue. Regardless, We cannot win without the south, and Huckabee has that vote on lock-down.
