New Jersey has a system called the Abbott Schools. Abbott schools are schools that are in the poorest neighborhoods. These schools get extra funding from the state. I think this is a good thing. However, a recent audit of one of these schools revealed that some of the funds were being mismanaged and misused.

For instance:

  • Bus drivers are getting paid 6 hours of overtime a month to charge their cell phones.
  • The school district was paying $345 per month for EACH of 39 cells phones for bus drivers.
  • Some bus drivers were being paid $39,000 to $73,000 a year in OVERTIME pay.
  • The district approved $11,900 to advertise a new school opening.

These are just a few of how funds were misused. What makes this even more outrageous is that the city where this waste occurred is only 1.3 square miles!
