In this day and age, any toy can become a potential lawsuit. Parents have sued over swing sets, magnets and stuffed animals. Some of these suits are warranted. Manufacturers should not be selling unsafe toys. However, sometimes we just want to blame someone instead of realizing that accidents do happen.
A couple in New Jersey are suing Little League, Sports Authority and a metal bat manufacturer because their son was hit with a ball in the chest causing his heart to stop and brain damage occur. This ball was hit by a metal bat. The parents claim that the metal bats are unsafe. Since Little League starting keeping records in the 1960s, there have been eight deaths by batted balls. Six of these were from wooden bats. Little League has worked with the bat manufacturers to make sure that the metal bats do not hit the ball any faster than the old wooden bats.
Why the switch? Metal bats last longer and are a better investment. If the ball had been hit by a wooden bat, would the parents still be suing? Probably.
