In the past, Muslim women who want to observe Muslim modesty laws have either not participated in public swimming activities or have gone into the water fully clothed. It seems that there is a market for what has been called Sharia Swimwear - swimsuits that fully cover the body and do not show any curves at all.
I do think that swimwear these day is getting a little out of hand (you might as well use a couple of band-aids and dental floss), however, this type of “modest” swimwear is also very extreme. It has found uses is every day society. People with cancer or have are sun sensitive are finding that the full coverage swimsuits are perfect. Some Islamic fundamentalists have found issue with the suits saying that they still reveal too much.
Muslim men also have a “modest dress code.” The Koran forbids them to wear silk or saffron and they must remained covered from navel to knee. Hmmm…. not too stringent of a dress code is it.
