I was reading through a ABC poll recently. The last question on the poll was about abortion. Although the media would have you believe that most Americans favor allowing abortions, the numbers show a slightly different perspective.

According to the poll, only 16% of Americans believe that ALL abortions should be legal while 12% of Americans believe that ALL abortions should be illegal.

That leaves 70% of Americans thinking somewhat in the middle (2% had no opinion) – 39% believe most cases should be legal and 31% believe that most cases should be illegal.

The problem with this poll is the grouping. 56% of the respondents were grouped under LEGAL ABORTION and 42% were grouped under ILLEGAL ABORTION. Does this really tell the true picture? No. In fact, we should instead be asking more detailed questions about the subject. What do Americans really believe should be legal vs. illegal abortions? Should abortion be considered as a alternate method of birth control? Should abortion be allowed in the cases of rape and incest?

It is interesting to note that the same question was asked in 1995 and the numbers were 60% legal vs. 40% illegal. Why the change? A clearer picture on the views of the American people would be established if clearer and more detail questions were asked and answered.

Over the Thanksgiving Holiday, my 7th grade daughter brought home an assignment from English class to write a paper about China’s One-Child Policy. She was given an article to read and had to answer questions from the article, as well as her own opinion, for her paper.

The article was very well written and really did give both sides of the story, except for one issue. The article mentioned that the male to female ratio in China could be approaching 132 males for every 100 females. NO mention was given as to why this is the problem!

Maybe they thought that kids this age were to young to be informed that sex-selection abortions have an impact on population. It has been widely reported that since the introduction of cheap and portable ultra-sound scanners at least 1/3 of women who have abortions in China are seeking to choose the sex of the baby (male in this case). In China, male offspring has long been the desired outcome.

Unfortunately, China is not the only country that uses abortion for sex-selection. India’s male to female ratio is also alarming. In the 2001 census in India it was reported that there were 927 females for every 1000 males. This compared to the world average of 1045 females to 1000 males.

These countries will eventually face serious problems unless their attitudes toward women change.

And yes, I did inform my daughter why the male to female ratio in China was this way. I thought she ought to know.
