I always thought that the Presidents used the same office desks in the Oval Office, but this is not the case. Currently, President George W. Bush is using the Resolute Desk. According to the White House Site This Desk is made from “the timbers of H.M.S. Resolute, an abandoned British ship discovered by an American vessel and returned to the Queen of England as a token of friendship and goodwill. When the ship was retired, Queen Victoria commissioned the desk and presented to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880.”

The desk was modified by President Franklin D. Roosevelt who requested that it be fitted with a panel carved with the Presidential coat-of-arms. It was installed in 1945 after the death of Roosevelt. President Reagan had it raised 2″ to accommodate his height (6′2″).

Only Presidents Johnson, Nixon and Ford have not used the desk since Hayes first used it in 1880.

That way I could actually pretend I was President and drive my model car all over my backyard! Of course, it would probably be cooler to have a model ferrari, off-road buggy or monster truck. I guess the neighbors might think I am a tad strange if I had a model Presidential Limo.

I was sitting in my car with my Auto air conditioning on listening to talk radio. I like to get my news from various sources since I think that they are all biased. It is very difficult these days to be unbiased because you bring your own political thought into journalism. So, I listen to conservative talk radio, but also read and watch more liberal sources of news.

The funny thing about talk radio, is it gets really repetitive. As each host changes, the news stories remain the same. Each has their own spin, but opinions tow the same line. I really love it when each host has a different take on things. Really stirs up the pot and makes people think. Talk show hosts shouldn’t be afraid to voice their opinions, even if it is against party lines!

The Oval Office is located in the West Wing of the White House. It has three large south facing windows behind the President’s desk and a fireplace at the north end of the room. The Oval Office has four doors. One opens to the Rose Garden, another to a private study and dining room, the third out to the main corridor of the West Wing and the fourth opens to the office of the President’s secretary.

The President did not start using the Oval Office until 1909. The office was formally in a rectangle room in the West Wing from 1902 to 1909 and before that in the President’s main residence.

The desk in the Oval Office is called the Resolute Desk (no modern office furniture here). The desk was built from the timber of the British frigate HMS Resolute and was a gift of British Queen Victoria to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880.

Each President has redesigned the room to their liking. President Clinton used vibrant colors of gold, cream, sapphire blue and crimson. President Reagan’s tones were more neutral. President Bush had the floors redone with a beautiful oak and walnut pattern.

It will be interesting to see how the Oval Office changes in 2009!

When I used to work in an office, I was amazed at how many extra coffee cups we had stored under the coffee machine. Most of these were personalized cups with some sort of political, environment or business message. You could tell what causes people were supporting by the type of cup that used to drink their coffee.

One of the cleverest cups I saw, was the Bill of Rights printed on the cup. As you added a hot drink, some of the rights disappeared!

I have often traveled to foreign soil and am amazed at the differences. I am very happy to be an American and would not trade places with anyone. Although I don’t always agree with the political policy, this is still the best place on earth.
