I was disappointed that I was not able to attend Glen Beck’s rally in Washington, DC last month. It would have been interesting to see lawn packed with people. Instead, I will probably be planning a trip in the next couple of months to take my children to visit some of the historical sites. I am also leaning toward purchasing concert tickets to the National Symphony or other cultural event.

I think it is important that my children see the impressive sites in Washington. It doesn’t matter who is in the White House or runs the Senate, the history that comes to live in Washington, DC is well worth the trip.

I have given up watching most political speeches. They are better than sleeping pills for me. It was constantly interrupted by clapping and standing and fawning, uggh!

The Constitution does require the President to give a State of the Union report to Congress from time to time. There is no set time table. And, it does not have to be a speech either. Thomas Jefferson preferred to give his State of the Union to Congress in written form. Bless you Thomas Jefferson!

Lyndon Johnson surprised President John F. Kennedy by giving Caroline, the President’s daughter a pony named Macaroni. The horse was allowed to roam freely on the White House grounds and horse supplies were provided to keep the horse fed. Macaroni, received thousands of fan letters from the America public, but I am unsure if any of the letters were actually read by Macaroni.

Besides the pet pony, the Kennedy’s kept a number of other pets at the White House including Charlie, Caroline Kennedy’s Welsh terrier Tom Kitten, a cat and Robin, a canary. Other animals included: Bluebell and Marybelle, parakeets, Tex and Leprechaun, ponies, Debbie and Billie, hamsters. Pushinka, Shannon, Wolf, and Clipper– dogs, Butterfly, White Tips, Blackie and Streaker– Pushinka and Charlie’s pups. Also Zsa Zsa, a rabbit, and Sardar, Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy’s horse.

Quite a collection!

One of my favorite times of the year is when the cherry blossom trees bloom in Washington, DC. Although I am still partial to Japanese Magnolia trees, the cherry trees are beautiful!

The cherry tree found in Washington, CD is the Kwanzan flowering cherry tree. It is a national tree of honor that was placed everywhere in Washington, DC at the turn of the century by Japanese diplomats. This tree has gigantic clusters of pinkish blooms that develop white as each flower ages.

Today I was in Philadelphia. I took a walking tour of the Independence Hall area with a tour guide. The guide reminded us of a quote by Patrick Henry from 1775. Patrick Henry represented Virginia in the First Continental Congress. He wanted his fellow Virginians to defend themselves against the British troops. He stated:

the distinctions between Virginia, Pennsylvanians, New Yorkers, and New Englanders are no more. I AM NOT A VIRGINIAN, BUT AN AMERICAN!

I think sometimes we forget that we are AMERICANS. We have started to call ourselves Irish Americans or African Americans or Italian Americans. Why do we separate ourselves in this manner. Sure, we can all be proud of our heritage, but first, WE ARE AMERICANS!
