It is interesting that Obama has decided to take immigration reform off the table for this year. This was one of his agenda items for this year and the Latino community was pushing for change. However, since Arizona passed its new immigration policy, I think that Obama may be hesitant to put this divisive issue on the table since he his sure to make one side or the other furious.

I don’t think that immigration reform is on the minds of great percentage of Americans rights now. Most are very concerned with the economy and where they will get the money to pay for food, housing and such tiny things as mac memory. After the economy grows, I am sure that immigration policy might again be brought to the front.

Besides the fact the New York voters were not happy with the idea, the issue made Hillary look bad at the debate. Spitzer did drop the idea and Hillary was able to say “I do not support driver’s licenses for undocumented workers.” Maybe she just should have said this the first time around!

Surprising instant it? New York Governor Elliot Spitzer has decided that he will not push granting driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. The public was definitely not in favor of this one and Spitzer has decided to back down. Of course, this does not solve the illegal immigration issue and I don’t think Congress will be doing anything about it in the near future. Their first plan, basically giving everyone amnesty and not focusing on the problems, went nowhere. Don’t look for any new ideas until after the 2008 election.

Hazelton, Pennsylvania is not welcoming in illegal immigrants. That is why they passed a city ordinance called the Illegal Immigration Relief Act. This Act would prohibited landlords from renting to illegals and prohibit business from hiring them (of course this is already a federal law that is not enforced).

U.S. District Judge James Munley declared the laws unconstitutional. I haven’t read the bill, or know what the impact is, however, the thing that disturbed me was that the Judge allowed the four illegal immigrants to bring their case against the city without being identified publicly. If these people had been US citizens this would not have been allowed. As far as I know, everyone is allowed to face their accusers.

Bottom line, if you are in this country OBEY ALL LAWS. If you want to sue, then you don’t get anymore rights than any citizen does.

Since the US is now considering an immigration policy that most of the country does not agree with, it is interesting to note that the new President of France, Sarkozy, is also proposing a new policy for France. This policy is VASTLY different from the one that is being voted on in the US Senate. It includes:

Immigrants must take a foreign language (French) test before coming to France

Immigrants must take a test on French values

Two-month training courses for the tests will be available in some countries

Families who receive relatives must sign a contract to ensure the integration of children into French society. These families must have the income to support immigrant relatives.

When Sarkozy was campaigning he blamed a rise in crime to ghetto-like neighborhoods who did not embrace French values:

If some people are annoyed by being in France, they they should not hesitate to leave a country that they do not like.

For too many years in America we have sought to solve problems by trying to patch the eventually outcome. Too many unwanted pregnancies? Let’s make abortions easier to get. Too many children with health problems related to childhood obesity? Let’s make sure every child has access to health care. Too many families below the poverty level? Let’s raise the minimum wage.

All of these ideas are just patches that eventually fall off again. And this is exactly what Bill Gates is proposing. Gates told the Senate committee:

“The U.S. cannot maintain its economic leadership unless our work force consists of people who have the knowledge and skills
needed to drive innovation.”

What is his solution? Better technical education for high school and college students in the United States? Encouraging US Citizens to be trained in these areas? Yes. In fact, Gates gave away approximately $3 billion since 1999 in educational programs and scholarships. However, right now, he wants more H1-B visas available for technical people from places such as India and China. Currently, there are about 65,000 technical visas available.

I have worked in the computer field and I know many that are still working in this field. I have personally heard stories of QUALIFIED US citizens losing jobs to LESS QUALIFIED non-citizens with H1-B visas. Why? Could it be that the non-citizens will take a MUCH LOWER salary? Could it be that they will work unreasonable hours in fear of losing their jobs? Yes! It is not always about hiring the best and the brightest. The bottom line, as always, is about money.

We are having a bit of a political ruckus here in my town. It seems that a group of South Asian citizens are concerned that the police are not treating them fairly. This occurred after an incident where a South Asian man was allegedly roughed up by police. A number of people protested at town hall and the man, who was found to be an illegal alien, was taken into custody by the INS.

Apparently, this has outraged some of the South Asian population even further. Some of them are demanding the police have a policy where they will not involve the INS even if they KNOW that a person is an illegal alien.

Hmmm….. Is it right for the local police to only uphold certain laws and not others? I think not. We have local laws, state laws and national laws. The police are there to protect and serve the community and that includes making sure the all laws are being obeyed. If it comes to their attention that a person that is arrested is an illegal alien, it is there duty to inform the authorities.

Summary – DON’T BREAK THE LAW and you won’t have to worry!
