Merry Christmas!!

I hope everyone is enjoying their holidays! We opened our presents this morning and everyone seemed to be pleased. The one thing my son wanted was a hunting knife (like those zero tolerance knives) and that was NOT under the tree for him. Little boys seem to think it is cool to carry around knives, but just too dangerous in my book.

I received a Kindle and can’t wait to catch up on all the good political books that are out there!

Woman Executed in Iran for Murder

Women are second class citizens in Iran. While woman in the US are worried about equal pay, medical bills or even treatment for eczema, these seem mundane when you are worried about extreme punishments. This story is from Newsmax. I don’t think this would happen to a man in Iran in the same situation:

The conviction of 40-year-old Jahed had enraged human rights activists because they alleged that she was forced to confess to a murder she didn’t commit. Authorities contended that Jahed, a former “temporary” wife of Iranian soccer star Nasser Mohammad Khani, had admitted to stabbing his “permanent” wife, Laleh Saharkhizan, in 2002, although she retracted the confession repeatedly during her trial, the Daily Mail reported.

The victim’s family, who attended the execution, rejected last-minute appeals for clemency. Khani also watched as Jahed bowed her head and prayed for a few moments before she burst into tears.
Then Khani’s son, whose age is not known, stepped forward and kicked away the chair to send her to her death.

In the Shiite religion — the majority belief in Iran — men and women can marry for an agreed period of time. Men can have up to four permanent wives, and any number of temporary wives. Women can be married to only one man at a time.

I recently returned from a trip to the west coast and I sure wished that I had read some netbook reviews before I left. Although my daughter had her laptop with her, I really think a netbook would have been a better option for me. I really need to get some work done and a small, web connected netbook would have been a much better choice for me.

Since I work from home, and use the internet for most of my work, buying a small netbook, would be the best option. Netbooks are smaller laptops without the extras, such as a DVD drive. They come with limited computing power and smaller hard drives as well. But if your business is mainly on the web, this should not be a problem.

The Toughest Job

One of the toughest jobs in the world has to be President of the United States. First, you can’t please all the people all the time. Second, you will always be hated by someone or some group and third, you age a lot. Even anti aging face cream can’t help the stress the body goes through as president.

Time Magazine put together a photo essay of presidents on their first day of office and compared it to their last day of office. From LBJ to W, the President that seemed to age the least was Richard Nixon.

Mr. Lincoln’s Guest Bed

President Lincoln purchased a bed with rosewood bed frames that is almost 8 feet long and 6 feet wide. It has a huge headboard and large footboard that is decorated with carved grapes, grapevines, and birds. Originally it was in the Prince of Wales Guest Room. Willie Lincoln died in the White House at age 11 in the bed on February 20, 1862.

Most experts believe that the bed was probably never used by President Lincoln. The original mattress was made of horsehair and was replaced by Barbara Bush. It was used by Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Calvin Coolidge. In 1945 it was moved to the Lincoln Bedroom by President Truman where it has remained since.

Home Security

Since the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center our country has been concerned about homeland security. We want to make sure that those who want to do our country harm are not allowed into the country. As a homeowner, I am also concerned with homeland security – my own homeland. Years ago, I rented a house that was broken into twice. After the first break in, I did very little to make sure that my house was secure. After the second break in, I decided that I must put a little more effort into my home security.

Unfortunately for me, home security systems were not as advanced as they are today. Now you can get an ADT Security System that has a Safepass Touchpad. Instead of typing in a code, you wave a small tag in front of the keypad to gain access.

Besides a home security system, it is wise to stay alert, have good lighting at all doorways and entrance ways and have your keys ready when entering your home or car. You can get more good tips about home security at ADT’s website.

Halloween Costumes

Remember the Nixon mask? That Halloween costume was popular for quite a while. This year, I wonder if McCain and Obama costumes will be as popular. I have already seen a few masks on the web, so the manufacturers are betting that political costumes will be popular this Halloween. If you don’t like Obama or McCain you can choose Bill or Hillary Clinton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Al Gore and even Nixon!
