In the past, Muslim women who want to observe Muslim modesty laws have either not participated in public swimming activities or have gone into the water fully clothed. It seems that there is a market for what has been called Sharia Swimwear – swimsuits that fully cover the body and do not show any curves at all.

I do think that swimwear these day is getting a little out of hand (you might as well use a couple of band-aids and dental floss), however, this type of “modest” swimwear is also very extreme. It has found uses is every day society. People with cancer or have are sun sensitive are finding that the full coverage swimsuits are perfect. Some Islamic fundamentalists have found issue with the suits saying that they still reveal too much.

Muslim men also have a “modest dress code.” The Koran forbids them to wear silk or saffron and they must remained covered from navel to knee. Hmmm…. not too stringent of a dress code is it.

According to the Washington Post there is a push to again try and pass the Equal Rights Amendment that failed so many years ago. The Amendment, which was passed by the House and the Senate in 1975, needed to be ratified by 38 states. Only 35 states were willing to ratify the Amendment.

The language of the Amendment is very vague:

Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.
Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.

Many women believe that this will suddenly increase pay and decrease sex discrimination. Unfortunately, men and women are not truly equal. Each sex has its own strengths and weaknesses. To say that men and women are virtually the same would be lying. Right now the Constitution provides an equal protection clause and this has stood up to cases at the Supreme Court level.

Would the ERA actually turn the tables on women? Maybe. Could the following happen?

Young women MUST register for the draft.

Women will not be given any preference for child custody

Women may not receive any special treatment in the army or in physical labor jobs

The Civil Rights Act did not make racism go away. The ERA will not make sexism go away. Unfortunately there are too many people in this country that will hate you just for the color of your skin or that you happen to be female. A Constitutional Amendment is not going to change anything.

Its a sad state of affairs when we, as women, have to resort to a website that ranks men! It seems that there are so many deadbeats out there that we need to warn one another. WomenSavers strives to warn other women about cheaters, liars, abusers and the like.

In order to rate a guy you must enter in the mans first, middle and last names, their birthdate and their state and country. This can definitely be useful to other women if you are “reporting” a guy who is a real slime-ball. The downside is the need for revenge that some women may need after getting dumped by a boyfriend.

The forums offer advice on abusive relationships, how to catch a cheater and medical and health advice. This is useful for all women who may need advice about relationships especially if they fear that they may be in an abusive one. Support is available from a trained psychotherapist, as well as from other women who may be in the same situation.

It is too bad in today’s society that we can not all treat each other with a little respect. Obviously there is a need for WomenSavers!

My middle school daughter is participating in a program at her school for Kiva.org. The are raising money to loan to people in developing countries. These loans help small businesses buy the necessary material that they need to make their business work!

What a fantastic idea! I love the old adage: Give a man (or woman) a fish and he eats for a day. Teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime.

Besides donating to my daughters school, I have loaned money to a woman in Kenya to help her buy cement for her business.

Sometimes money is need to help feed and clothe those who don’t have anything, but we need to be better at helping others get back on their feet in a way that will make them succeed in the future. How come we don’t have anything like this in the US? Or maybe we do and I just haven’t heard of it.

Over the Thanksgiving Holiday, my 7th grade daughter brought home an assignment from English class to write a paper about China’s One-Child Policy. She was given an article to read and had to answer questions from the article, as well as her own opinion, for her paper.

The article was very well written and really did give both sides of the story, except for one issue. The article mentioned that the male to female ratio in China could be approaching 132 males for every 100 females. NO mention was given as to why this is the problem!

Maybe they thought that kids this age were to young to be informed that sex-selection abortions have an impact on population. It has been widely reported that since the introduction of cheap and portable ultra-sound scanners at least 1/3 of women who have abortions in China are seeking to choose the sex of the baby (male in this case). In China, male offspring has long been the desired outcome.

Unfortunately, China is not the only country that uses abortion for sex-selection. India’s male to female ratio is also alarming. In the 2001 census in India it was reported that there were 927 females for every 1000 males. This compared to the world average of 1045 females to 1000 males.

These countries will eventually face serious problems unless their attitudes toward women change.

And yes, I did inform my daughter why the male to female ratio in China was this way. I thought she ought to know.
