Dumbest Moments in Business

Fortune has put together the Dumbest Moments in Business 2009 – Midyear edition with some interesting choices. Some of my favorites include:
- PepsiCo redesigns the Tropicana orange juice carton causing customers to phone, email and blog about the how they hate the new design. The new design is axed.
- Apple creates a new “baby shaker” app. Customers could download a 99 cent app that would allow you to shake a crying baby until red x’s appeared on the eyes. The app was taken down two days later and Apple apologized.
- The Yankees hoped to recoup the cost of their new $1.3 billion stadium by selling prime tickets for $2,500 each. Unfortunately, the seats were left open and the Yankees were forced to cut the cost to $1,250 each. How many are open now?
- Obama makes a big deal about asking his cabinet members to cut $100 million from their budgets. This may sound like a big deal, but if you had a budget of $500,000 that would be like asking you to trim $40!
- The government announces on May 8 that banks should be able to handle unemployment rates of up to 8.9%. One day later, unemployment hit 8.9% and two months later it is at 9.4%. Are we still in good shape?
