Health Care Passes, States Sue

The Health Care Bill passed the House on Sunday and went into law today when it was signed by President Obama. Now might be a good time to find a quick weight loss solution and get your other health problems under control before this mess really goes into effect. The troubling point is that no one knows what to expect. While most of the provisions won’t take effect for months, even years, this is what takes effect immediately:

  • States are required to maintain existing Medicaid and children’s insurance health plans until 2014 when the new “plan” will take effect. With a lot of states in budgetary trouble, this could be a problem.
  • Freestanding birth centers are eligible under Medicaid payments.
  • Medicare will provide coverage for those with environmentally caused diseases such as asbestos exposure related diseases.
  • The Secretary of Health and Human Services must establish criteria “for determining whether health insurance issuers and employment-based health plans have discouraged an individual from remaining enrolled in prior coverage based on that individual’s health status.”

Since a good percentage of the American people did not want to see the passage of this law, it will be interesting to see how those who voted for the bill fare in the November elections.
