Is the FDA Doing Their Job?

The Federal Drug Administration seems to be really mediocre at doing its job. Over the past few years, numerous drugs and supplements have been pulled from the shelf after the medical community has warned of adverse effects. On the other hand, life saving cancer treatments and heart drugs seem to take forever to be approved.
And then, the FDA warned General Mills that their Cheerios product could be a drug. The FDA said in a letter to General Mills:
“Based on claims made on your product’s label, we have determined that your Cheerios Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal is promoted for conditions that cause it to be a drug.”
Because Cheerios claims that eating the cereal can help lower bad cholesterol, the FDA says it is a drug.
Instead of always relying on the FDA to do its due diligence, each consumer must also study the product and read the literature. For example, if you are interested in taking the diet pill, phenphedrine, make sure you read at least one (if not many) phenphedrine review. Talk to others who may have taken any supplements and ask their opinions as well. Keep reviewing the product has long as you are taking it, and even after you have stopped. Keep informed!
