Judge Sonia Sotomayor May Become The Next Supreme Court Justice

President Barack Obama has nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor from New York to fill the spot that will be vacated by the retiring Justice David Souter. Sotomayor, 54, will be the first Latino to serve on the Supreme Court and the third woman.

She is a graduate of Princeton University and Yale Law School, a former prosecutor and private attorney. She became a federal judge for the Southern District of New York in 1992. She was first appointed by President George H.W. Bush, then named an appeals judge by President Bill Clinton.

After her appointment more than ten years ago as an appeals judge she stated “I don’t believe we should bend the Constitution under any circumstance. It says what it says. We should do honor to it.” And yet, she has also been caught on tape saying that judges make policy.

Unless something outrageous surfaces, she will probably have no problem being confirmed.
